How to Hide Cables Under a Desk (Without Drilling Holes)

Cable spaghetti under a desk is cheap to fix and annoying to live with — and you don't need to drill a single hole. Here's a no-drill method that works on any desk, renter-friendly included.

STEP 1: UNPLUG EVERYTHING AND TAKE INVENTORY

Unplug every cable and lay them out. You'll usually find two or three you don't need at all. Sort the rest into cables that stay (monitor power, PC power, dock) and cables that move (phone charger, earbuds). The permanent ones get mounted under the desk; the travelers get a home on top of it.

STEP 2: MOUNT YOUR POWER STRIP UNDER THE DESK

A power strip on the floor is the root of most cable messes. No-drill options that hold: adhesive mounting strips rated for the strip's weight (clean the desk underside with rubbing alcohol first), under-desk power strip holder brackets, or screw-in mounts if the desk is yours to modify. Plug everything in BEFORE you mount the strip.

STEP 3: GIVE CABLES A TRAY OR RACEWAY

An under-desk cable tray (wire or plastic basket) catches power bricks, excess length, and the strip in one hidden channel — the single highest-impact purchase in cable management. A slim adhesive cable raceway keeps the drop to your outlet neat.

STEP 4: BUNDLE WITH REUSABLE TIES

Use velcro cable ties, not zip ties. Bundle by destination, leave slack at each end, tuck bundles into the tray. Don't bundle power cables tightly — bricks need air.

STEP 5: TAME THE CABLES THAT TRAVEL

Adhesive cable clips along the desk's back edge hold charger ends within reach. A compartment desk organizer gives chargers, earbuds, and pens a designated spot on top.

STEP 6: LEAVE SLACK WHERE THINGS MOVE

Standing desk? Leave a service loop of slack for full height. Fixed desk? A few inches at each device so you can pull things forward without unplugging the world.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Don't run cables where your chair rolls. Don't block power brick ventilation. Don't daisy-chain power strips — one strip per wall outlet. Don't over-tighten or bend cables sharply at connectors.

THE 20-MINUTE VERSION

Mount the power strip under the desk, drop everything into one under-desk cable tray, velcro-tie the bundles. Three products, twenty minutes.
